Many of you will have read / heard of my run-in with the DVLA & VOSA (two UK government agencies who control the licencing of vehicles over here) when I shortened the ill-fated "Stumpy" the GV (Grand Vitara). After that I vowed never to cut or weld a chassis again! LOL, so, when it came to creating rear recovery points for "Stealth", they had to be fully bolt-on... but I couldn't find anything on the market for them... so I had some made -

A big piece of angle-iron is the main piece of the construction, with some square end caps welded in, with two strategically placed holes... these are used to bolt the assembly into the back crossmember tube. First a couple of snugly sized tubes with welded end caps containing welded in captured holes are tapped into the crossmember tube for this to mount to. The other pieces of angle-iron are to pick up the existing towbar fixings in the chassis. And the tabs are for shackle points... read on! :)

I had the pieces made separately so that I can bring them home and test fit them... so I bolted the big piece in place, and then the towbar mounting ones, and then carefully marked the overlap, and cut big slots in the big piece to take the smaller pieces, and tacked them in place... I also cut out the slots for the big recovery tabs, and tacked them in place too... then when I was happy with it all I took it up to be welded at the fab shop I use, so you see the resulting assembly above.

Test fitting again now it's all been welded up... and you can see the multitude of recovery points I now have on the back! When I was happy with it, I treated it to three coats of black Hammerite paint...

... and then bolted it in place... the outer bolts are the original tow bar mounts in the chassis rails, the middle one is an extra one, that goes right through the chassis rail...

And is bolted at the top... so that's four mounting bolts per side! That shouldn't go anywhere!!!

The finished article... fits nice under the Offroad Armoury bumper, and gives me four shackle points and a huge Dixon-Bate ball and pin point in the middle...
